Project Goals and Objectives
Project Goals
-
To establish the Garrison Historic Area as vibrant, world class Heritage Tourism product that serves as a catalyst for expanded heritage tourism offerings nation-wide, and helps to establish Barbados as a major heritage tourism destination in the international tourism market-place;
-
To contribute to the sustainable economic and social development of the Barbadian community by expanding overall national tourism-related economic activity, and creating an attraction that celebrates the historic military contributions of Barbadians of all ethnic backgrounds.
Project Objectives
-
To build on the successful tourism efforts of the various non-government organisations, government agencies, and private entrepreneurs active in the Garrison area by establishing the BGHC as a tourism industry-based organisation that can support the needs of the individual groups from a position of institutional strength;
-
To provide necessary quality control supports to maintain the highest quality experience for visitors to Garrison attractions and events;
-
To establish sustainable financial self-sufficiency for the GHA by developing internal revenue generating mechanisms;
-
To establish strong linkages to major national, regional, and international initiatives with potentially positive tourism impacts such as: the United Nations application to designate Bridgetown as a World Heritage Site; and Barbados’ hosting of the 2007 World Cup; and
-
To increase “buy-in” and support within the majority Barbadian community by sustaining inputs from key cultural institutions and tradition bearers to expand tourism offerings expressive of this community’s historic traditions.
In pursuit of these goals and objectives, the BGHC will need to develop and implement four development strategies.
